Choosing the photo
lIGHT size and PHOTO content

The Night Light
Preferably no more than two subjects.
Close-ups work best.
Keep in mind that the Night Light is square so the image will be cropped to fit those proportions.

The Medium Table Top Lamp
Preferably no more than three subjects.
Close-ups work best.
Keep that in mind that the Medium lamp is square so the image will be cropped to fit those proportions.

The Large and Extra Large Lamp
The larger size lamps are less limiting because of their size.
Available in both Horizontal and Vertical orientations.
Image quality

The better the quality of the image, the better the final result of the carving will be.

The resolution is too low.
Each picture is defined by pixels. If the resolution is low, the amount of pixels will be too small to properly define the picture. Often this doesn’t seem the case if you have a small image. But when enlarged to the size we work with, the photo will seem very “choppy”.We recommend working with a resolution of 300 dpi.

The image file is compressed.
Several of the image formats, such as jpg, compress the size of the file. This is done to save on file space. The result is that some of the variations in shades disappear. Compression can occur when saving an image file not at the highest quality. Image sharing software often compresses files as well.
If the image you submit is from a digital camera, try to send us the original file from the camera. That would be the best quality file we can get. If you need it cropped in a certain way, just let us know.
Images from cell phones vary in quality depending on the phone and the settings. Most images that come from this source are compressed in order to make the file size smaller and save memory space. If that is the only file you have, please feel free to send it to us and we will let you know if it is good enough.

Most online album have the option of supplying the file at the original quality, which may be higher. Please check the Frequently Asked Questions of the source site. The best prints are original ones. Copies of a print and/or prints printed on your computer printer are usually compromised in quality. For best scanning practices, see below.
Different scanners come with different settings and software. In general, what we are looking for in scanned pictures is:
1. Resolution at a minimum of 300dpi (if you are ordering a bigger piece 600dpi would be even better).
2. Color Definition at the highest (1 million colors is good).
3. Make sure other filters on your scanning software do not alter the picture. For example, if you have a “sharpen” filter, turn it to “none”.
4. When saving the file do NOT compress the file. Save at the highest quality.
